Race Marred By Crashes
Spires Cycling Club are one of Ulsters 'New Kids on the Block' but today they promoted their first open road race at the Loup near Magherafelt Co Derry.
They put on a great event but lady luck was not on their side today as two of the races had to be scrapped due to a serious accident in the masters and ladies event.
The only race to get a result was the masters/ladies and North Down Janine McNally was first ahead of her club mate Paul Swinerton who took the over 50s award. The leading riders in this race were unaware of the crash behind.
The crash in the masters event happened in the last few miles and the road was then blocked so other races on the course were nullified.
Greasy roads on the course may have caused a few other crashes so it was a disappointing day for many. The care and attention for those hurt was admirable especially by the North Down CC riders in the masters/ladies event who were involved in the crash themselves.
Louise Fullerton who was out on a club run put her nursing skills to good use and assisted. Great work was also carried out by St John ambulance on the race and the emergency services.
Lets hope every one makes a full recovery and up on their bikes again.
